“Taking back my kingdom . . . it seems an impossible dream. Your father, the vampirical,

               is he that powerful?”

“If we get my father’s help, your enemies will die in agony.”

“But at what price?” GoGo thought.

Sygnosis climbed behind GoGo and twisted one of her long braids that had loosened.

“What do you know of the missing Rhune Mystic?” GoGo asked.

                       The hair twisting stopped.

“Rhune?” Sygnosis asked. “I know nothing of this.”

“Omar told me about the bug drug. You have been here with me at the mountain palace

               since your arrival—”

                       “Capture,” Sygnosis corrected.

“The human blood inside the bellies of the bugs, where did you get it?”

“I am not accustomed to questions,” said Sygnosis.

“But I am accustomed to lies, and I know them well,” said GoGo as she turned to face the

               vampire.

                       Sygnosis leapt off the bed.

“I am not Sooth or Daka! Nor am I your subject!”

“This is the truth. You are more. You are higher. You must answer me now in truth, not as

your queen but as your lover and your friend.”

                       “I must do nothing.”

“You are commanded by love, a power greater than thyself.”

“I command me, not love!” she said. “Love is my slave. I am a vampire. It does what I tell

               it to do.”

“Am I nothing to you that you would lie to me like a common bloodsucker?” asked GoGo.
