He rushed toward the sound of her voice and found her bloody and naked on the floor. The
cell reeked of urine.
“Thank God!” he said as he lifted her into his arms and took her from the cell. The men
turned their heads from the queen’s nakedness and Sooth covered her with his cloak.
“My son?” she said through her tears.
“I am here, Mother.”
GoGo mustered a smile as Daka and the palace guards surrounded the royals with a circle
of protection.
“Stay inside the gauntlet,” Daka said.
Omar nodded and they all ran through the jail out into the night and away.
A Moroccan sentinel posted on the city wall spotted the rescue party running in the
shadows.
“Look! They wear our uniforms!” he said.
“Yet they steal the royal prisoner!” said a second Moroccan sentinel. “Ramoth will impale
us if she escapes.” He lifted his horn to sound the alarm.
“No!” The first sentinel stopped him. “Ramoth is a madman. Out of anger he will pluck the
eyes from the first ones who saw her escape, whether we prevent it or not. Let the jailers feel his
wrath. Judar Pasha is our master not that black dog,”
“What should we do?”
The first sentinel looked farther down the city wall.
“The archer, with the strange eyes,” he said.
“They call him Katan,” said the second sentinel and called out to him.
