soldiers extended their arms and blocked his way.
“I said, what is your name? You can’t just enter this area!”
“Ramoth. My name is Ramoth,” he said impatiently.
The bureaucrat checked his registry book.
“Your name is not listed for admittance,” he said.
“What do you mean not listed? I am Ramoth, senior advisor to King Kanja!”
He caught himself. “The former King Kanja . . . But that’s not important. What is important is that
you do as you’re told!”
“This Book of Registry tells me what to do. And it says don’t let you through. You’ll have
to go to the registrar and qualify for the proper credentials,” he said, pointing to a long line of
people at a window across the room.
“Qualify? Credentials? Do you know who I am?” Ramoth barked.
“You just told me. The name means nothing. Now go over there and stand in the line, like
everyone else!”
“I am the Hero of Rabat!”
The entire room turned to look.
“Hero? Is that your official title?” the bureaucrat asked.
“Official? You insect! I am very important! Now get off your ass and go tell Judar Pasha
I’m here.”
The armed soldiers moved in to bring order.
“Step back!” a soldier commanded.
“This is ridiculous,” said Ramoth.
“Whoever you are, lower your voice and do as you’re told,” said a soldier. “If you want
access to this area, go and register. And don’t try to cut the line.”
“Cut the line? I curse your mother!”
The soldiers now used force to restrain Ramoth. Kojo panicked but was helpless to console
his new master.
