“It looks like you were right, my queen—delicacies for the devil.”
He grabbed a particularly exotic jar from a crate and held it up. “Sheep’s brains!”
“An item no traitorous pig can do without,” said GoGo.
“For they match his own,” said Daka.
GoGo looked at the hoard in amazement.
“We will use these goods to repay the Rhune Mystics for their kindness to us,” she said.
“As you command,” said Daka.
Suddenly, the grim faces of vampires appeared in the night. They rose from the sand,
victims of Sygnosis, Omar, and Sooth’s bite. Daka stopped his work atop a camel, drew his sword
and jumped down to protect the queen.
“Sygnosis! Sooth!” GoGo called out into the darkness.
Sooth emerged. His fangs were extended and his mouth was bloody. He glanced at his
queen, looked down and wiped the blood away. “Yes, Go n’Gola.”
“The fallen . . . , she said, “those who have been bitten . . .”
Sooth looked out at the bloodthirsty clusters of vampires coming toward them.
“They are seeking their makers,” said Sooth.
“Would they be under my command? Would they fight?” asked GoGo.
“They are under the command of the vampire who spawned them. But retaining a vampire
legion is unwise,” Sooth replied.
“Why? We will need all the force we can muster if we are to retake the city,” said GoGo.
“Vampire mercenaries have to be paid in blood and these soldiers are the Undead not
Azulites,” said Sooth. “Their senses would be vexed each night upon waking from daysleep and
