“If I could give Prince Omar azulin from my own body I would. But my veins still have

traces of human blood. Pure azulin is the blood of born-vampires and cannot be given by Azulites

or the Undead. And remember, the Darkling must give her azulin of her own free will. It cannot be

taken by force. Any attempt to cut it from her could release adrenaline into her veins and poison

it. If her azulin is transferred to him through ‘the bite’, he would become her slave, the Undead, a

fate worse than death. So you must persuade Sygnosis to choose the grail over the fang, and allow

the prince to ‘drink’ her azulin.”

The delegation arrived at a cave opening covered with a massive crimson curtain.

“Can Sygnosis feel a human touch?” GoGo asked without looking at him.

“Yes,” Sooth replied. “Only humans who have become vampires lose earthly sensation.

Omar’s life force is leaving him. If the prince dies, even Sygnosis cannot bring him back.”

Sooth looked at GoGo tenderly. “Are you ready?”

                       GoGo nodded nervously.

Sooth used his arm to part the heavy velvet curtain and the queen stepped inside. He closed

the curtain behind her and stood silently with the men. They all looked at each other. Even with

their collective military experience, none of them knew what would happen now. They were all

afraid. But the difference between a good soldier and a bad one is not the absence of fear, it is the

presence of courage, and these men were lions. They would die protecting their queen.

GoGo’s heart pounded, her mouth was dry. She swallowed hard. There before her, deep

into the cave, the vampire Sygnosis was chained between two thick wooden posts. Yet this room

was more bedchamber than prison, adorned with fine silks, velvets, and furniture from the Orient.

The queen walked slowly, cautiously toward the deadly vampire, who watched her every step,

uncertain of the business of the night. She was clearly stressed, a chained animal, panting heavily,

ready to strike. She was filthy and reeked of an awful sweetness, like rancid fruit. GoGo grimaced

but resisted holding her nose. A small ornate table sat next to one of the restraining posts. There

was a beautiful painted bowl on top filled with water and a washcloth. The vampire watched as

GoGo picked up a vial of aromatic oil and tapped several drops into the water, removed the cloth,
