“There are some Undead who relish their afflictions, even celebrate them,” Sygnosis said,

her long black hair whipping in the wind. “Some who believe the Undead are the only true and

romantic human vampires. My clan is the royal House of Sparth, and my mother and father

spawned most of the wealthy and powerful Undead of Europe. They are all members of the

Dresden Covenant, a very exclusive secret society.”

                       “Covenant?” asked Omar.

“Witches have covens. Vampires have covenants,” Sygnosis replied. “The Dresdens

protect the British royal family and other European royals from the fang in exchange for

protection from persecution. They are barons and baronesses, trusted confidants and secret

               guardians of the queen.”

“I had no idea,” said Omar.

How does it feel to be a vampire?” Sygnosis asked.

I have been feeding on lamb’s blood but I want—” Omar looked around to see if anyone

was listening. “I hunger for human blood,” he whispered. “How do I get some?”

Sygnosis reached into her garment and removed a handful of dead mosquitos. Their

translucent, blood-engorged bellies were swollen to the size of cranberries.

“Here,” she said and handed them to Omar. “Eat these.”

                       “Mosquitos?” said Omar.

                       “Their bellies contain human blood.”

“So this is your secret. I wondered why you had not hunted since being among us,” said

               Omar.

Sygnosis looked at the Azulite prince in silence . . . the silence born of omission, when

only a portion of the truth is known.
