could look past the pall of disgrace that exiled the royals into the desert in the first place, the

               accommodations were not that bad.

Over the years, GoGo’s crown had grown heavy, laden down with obligation and pretense.

The Timbuktu royal residence became more prison than palace. But living in the secret mountain

GoGo began to experience a feeling she could not remember ever having . . . freedom. Sygnosis

took great pleasure in leading her on explorations of the mountain’s hidden alcoves and

discovering new gemstone deposits. They found a large hole in the western face that opened into a

deep pool of warm, crystal clear water. They named it Nymph Grotto and never told the men

about it. They swam naked together and watched as the setting sun through the mist created a

kaleidoscope of breathtaking colors on the rock walls.

“I’ll bet there is nothing like this in the Astral Realm,” said GoGo

“What would you bet? asked Sygnosis.

“What would I get if I win?” asked GoGo.

“A river of diamonds, a mountain of rubies, and a valley of emeralds,” she replied.

The extravagance of the prize stunned GoGo. “You’re bluffing.”

“Darklings do not bluff,” said Sygnosis.

GoGo smiled. “I have an even greater prize for you if you win.”

                       “Greater? Tell me!”

                       GoGo held Sygnosis.

“I will rain on you with kisses, shine down on you with laughter, and fill your nights with

               the starlight of my desire.”

“Truly a greater prize,” Sygnosis said. “And I shall win.

“Look at this grotto,” GoGo said, “the emerald pool, how the mist and the light give birth

to radiant colors. Even I have never seen such beauty. How can you be so sure you will win?”
