The voice spoke. “My ocean has cleansed you of the past.”
GoGo looked up at the stars and took a deep breath.
“How I want to be cleansed,” GoGo whispered.
The voice spoke again. “Hold me. I am the sand beneath you.”
GoGo grabbed two handfuls of sand.
“Pour me,” the voice said.
GoGo held the sand over her and released the warm grains down onto her body.
“More,” the voice said.
She grabbed two more handfuls and showered herself.
“More.”
Again and again she scooped handfuls of sand upon herself until she was covered.
The sand gathered and formed into a woman’s naked body on top of her.
The voice spoke. “I am the sand woman, endless and everlasting, all around thee, covering
and protecting thee, keeping thee safe and warm.
The words made GoGo’s injured heart weep, for even as she loved her king, he had never
said such things to her. The desert wind blew through her soul clearing away the bad memories.
The sand had the sweet scent of her lover.
“Why did you help my son?”
“Because . . . de’em amro da’am,” Sygnosis whispered.
“Da’am amro de’em,” replied GoGo.
The sand woman became Sygnosis— the Sahara became their bed— and the night became
fire. In GoGo’s mind, ever after, Sand Woman was added to the list of names by which her
legendary vampire was known.
